Saint Sebastian (Milan, 256 – Rome, 20 th January 288) was a Roman soldier, martyr
because he supported Christian belief, worshipped as a saint by the Catholic and
Orthodox Churches.
The image of the pierced San Sebastian became in the centuries an icon of inspiration
for many artists. He was portrayed in different stances, looks and poses: from the
most languid and ephebic one by Piero del Pollaio, to the manlier one by Andrea
Mantegna.
The mystery of the powerful image of Saint Sebastian embodies the heroic Virtue
needed to gain the holiness: the Arche, the principle of the human being made in the
image and likeness of God. In the perfection of his shapes, enduring the physical
suffering of martyrdom, his body does not hide its beauty, not even in the ultimate act
of giving his life for God.
Because it represents the immortality of the soul and the promise of Resurrection of
the bodies made by Christ when he defeated Death.
